Week #1: (9/8) Intro to Industrial Control Systems

Post by rjagodowski »

This week we will discuss chapter 1 in the text, Introduction to Industrial Control Systems . Handouts for the presentation of this chapter can be found in the Registered Users Only section here. For convenience, here is the first chapter:

When you get the text, the first reading assignment is to read through Chapter 1 & Chapter 2. You should answer the questions at the end of the chapters. Chapter 2 reviews much of the content presented in ELEC-332 Digital and Linear Circuits, so we will emphasize the content which is new.

Here is an interactive demonstration on the operation of a PID (Proportional-Integral-Differential) controller for a robotic arm. We'll investigate the theory behind PID controllers later in the course, but this is a good simulator for the fundamental mechanism of modern control systems. It should also help show continuity and application from previous courses in the E.E.T. curriculum. This tutorial has sound, so please have your sound enabled as you work through the demonstration.

From the schematic diagram, make note of the "blocks" used: op-amps, DAC, feedback (resistor sensor connected to robotic arm), actualor (the robotic arm) and power amplifier (could be IC or discrete components (BJTs or FETs).

And here's a Process Control Tutorial: The Chocolate Milk Machine.
