I'm going to use today's lecture to help show the the relationship between hardware and software in modern design, and then we'll discuss some troubleshooting techniques to better be able to determine where a problem lies. Since most systems today contain both hardware and software, proper troubleshooting requires the ability to discern which is more likely to be the cause of a problem, and then develop a plan to test your hypothesis, and ultimately solve the problem.

We will be using the circuits for the Incubator currently being tested by many of you in the EET-250 Control System Theory course. For convenience, here are the schematics and pictorial diagrams for the circuits.

We'll spend time in Chapter 6 of the Process Control text studying how the ADC0831 can be used most accurately to convert the temperatures between 70 and 120 Fahrenheit. Note that the LM34 creates an output of 10 mV/*F, so 70* room temperature causes the LM34 to have a 700 mV, or 0.700 Volt output. By properly adjusting Spanning and Offset (under BS2 control) the 8 bit resolution of the ADC8031 can be used to maximum advantage. We'll begin with the discussion on page 186 in Chapter 6 of the Process Control text. Chapter 6 is attached here:
