Week #12: (4/10-14) Hydraulic Cylinders & Fluid

Post by rjagodowski »

This week we'll be discussing some specifics about hydraulic cylinders, fluid & systems. We had mentioned that for pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders that the piston will develop more force on the extension stroke than the retraction stroke. This is because the surface area on the blind face of the piston is greater than the surface area on the rod side of the piston. On the other hand, assuming equal pressures and flow rates, a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder will retract faster than it will extend. This is because there is less volume to fill on the cylinder because the piston rod takes up some of the cylinder volume which must be filled with the air/fluid.

This tutorial should be a review at this point: Forces of Hydraulic & Pneumatic Cylinders.

We'll start with this review of The Hydraulic Cylinder

Functions of Hydraulic Oil presents the task that the hydraulic fluid has to perform in a hydraulic system.
