Week #13: (4/17-21) PID Chart, pH & Analytical Instrumentation

Post by rjagodowski »

Due to the visit to our classes last week by an area high school, we didn't get to complete the exercise on completing the PID calculation chart in Chapter 8 of the Parallax Process Control text. So we will begin this week's lecture with the chart and materials from Week #12.

Then we will then begin discussing Chapter 8 in the Bartelt text with Analytical Instrumentation. We will begin the discussion with pH. The pdfs of the handouts can be found here in the Registered Users Only section.

Here is a link to Khan Academy presenting the topics of pH, pOH and the pH Scale. If you've taken a chemistry course this material should be somewhat of a review. If you haven't, don't worry too much about it. Just understand what makes a substance and acid (H+ concentration) or base (OH-) concentration, and the logarithmic nature of the pH Scale. Scroll down about mid-page to see the pH scale with the approximate pH's of some typical familiar materials.
