Week #7: (10/17) Diode Review, Measurement Basics

Post by rjagodowski »

This week we'll discuss some of the issues that may arise in some of the lab exercises, such as: generator loading (50 ohm internal resistance); 10x o'scope probes: what they do, how they do it and why?; scope probe compensation; Agilent Oscilloscope Probe multiplication setting.

Here are some miscellaneous support links for Measurements:

YouTube Tutorial on how to use an oscilloscope. The scope used in this video is the same as our Agilent Digital 'Scopes. I think you would be well served to watch this video in its entirety (about 23 minutes).

Here's a review of Thevenin's Theorem which states, in simplified form, that any circuit can be modeled by a single voltage source known as the Thevenin Voltage, in series with a single series resistance (impedance) known as the Thevenin Resistance/Impedance. This Thevenin Equivalent can also be thought of the model for any practical voltage source: generator, D.C. battery, or the waveform generators used in our lab. The latter have 50 ohm internal resistances.

Internal Resistance of a Function Generator.

Internal Resistance of a Voltage Source from YouTube (7:25).

How to calibrate a 10x scope probe.

Here is an Applet from Falstad.com which shows the frequency content of various signals. Of particular relevance here is the square wave and it's rich harmonic content. If the Scope probes are not calibrated properly, than the image you view on the display will not be a true representation.
