Week #13: (4/15-19) Soldering & RoHS Compliance

Post by rjagodowski »

The topic of Soldering will be presented to make sure that everyone in the class has had some exposure and experience with soldering. If everyone has had soldering experience, we'll cover this topic quickly. If you have not yet soldered, then read the following and see your instructor. (If you have not soldered, you will be given the opportunity to solder & construct a Variable Voltage Power Supply . You must build it and demonstrate it's operation before the end of the semester. There is no definite "due date" for its completion, but it is recommended that you do so before May 1 to avoid the "end of semester" crunch of Final Exams and the Advanced Manufacturing project. You will need to find available time to work on your kit. You should consult with your instructor for the best time(s) during the week to do this.)

BE SURE TO READ THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND LINKS BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF YOUR KIT!!!

Here is a pdf from the Cal Poly Robotics Club on Soldering Fundamentals.

Here is a 20 minute YouTube video series showing Basic Soldering Lessons. This is pretty dated (1980) but the content is very good, plus it's so typical of instructional media of the day.

And here is the link to Weller Soldering Equipment which is a popular manufacturer of soldering equipment.

Here are some links regarding lead-free solder and it's cost.
