Week #10: (3/25-29) RFID & Workcell Concepts

Post by rjagodowski »

We'll spend a bit of time reviewing the content of RFID equipment which we hastily covered last week in Week #9.

Then we will continue with a discussion of Work Cell Concepts. The content presented this week assumes you are already familiar with the basics of LEAN as presented in the EET-255 Advanced Topics of E.E.T. course. If you are not, you may wish to read this content presented in Lean & Six Sigma from EET-255.

Assignment: For next week's class, watch the Webcast presentation above entitled Webcast on LEAN Workcell Design. It is about an hour in length, but it's the first 30 minutes or so which exemplifies LEAN for manufacturing, then around the 30 minute mark their emphasis shifts to the application of LEAN concepts to service industries.

Here's a YouTube video showing how proper workcell design integrates with LEAN concepts (13:40). This is a factory tour of a company called FastCap which manufactures a variety of woodworking tools and products. They were founded in 1997 and their website includes numerous links and videos showing how their business philosophy, including LEAN. They have this pdf on LEAN in a Nutshell:

Here's an interesting video to show how their LEAN Mindset is pervasive throughout the entire workforce: Fastcap 2017 Best Improvements (22:28) and Fastcap 2018 Best Improvements (15:05).

Here's the link to the extensive list of Fastcap's Lean Videos including the Lean Bathroom at FastCap (7:39). WATCH the Bathroom video because they show how they are in a mindset of continual improvement when they discover a problem with their current process LIVE on the video (about the 5:00 min point). A very important statement is made during this video: "Never blame the person. Blame the process." They quickly identify the problem with the process and correct it.
