Week #9 & #13: (3/18-22) BS2 Prof. Dev. Board, Stampworks, Stepper Motors & PING.

NOTE: According to the Academic Calendar, this Wednesday, 3/20, follows a MONDAY SCHEDULE FOR DAY CLASSES. We WILL meet as scheduled on Wednesday.

Topics for 3/18:
We will have an introduction and discussion of the BS2 Professional Development Board and the StampWorks text. These are the boards you will use for many of your experiments after Spring Break beginning in Week #9. The documents for the BS2 Professional Development Board and the StampWorks Manual can be found here. (Note this link brings you back to the 2016 Spring semester, so do not post any information in the old forums.)

The StampWorks Manual of experiments and the BS2 Professional Development board are designed to allow the experimenter to construct relatively advanced circuits & programs with a minimum of hardware construction. Please treat the BS2 Professional Development Boards carefully. They are in short supply and are no longer available. You MUST work in teams of 2 for these experiments.

Topics for 3/20:

On Wednesday, 3/20, we are following a Monday Schedule to compensate for the Monday we will lose on 4/15. O this day we will discuss Stepper Motor Control & the ultrasonic PING Sensor.

PING Sensor:


Time permitting, we will also start the discussion on the ultrasonic PING Sensor.

The PING Ultrasonic Sensor is one of the required labs you will have to perform before the end of the semester.

Here's the link to the PING Sensor from Parallax and here is the Chapter from the Smart Sensors Text using the PING sensor. These are the exercises you should perform when using the PING.

The PING sensor reports it's information to the BS2 using the PULSIN command. Here is the information about PULSIN from the Syntax & Reference Manual:

4x4 Keypad

Another required device you'll be using later in the semester is the 4x4 keypad which uses a matrix system to determine which key is pressed. This basic concept is common to most keypad & keyboard components. Here is the pdf for the keypad exercises:

NOTE: When copying and pasting the sample code for the 4x4 Keypad in the pdf into the BS2 Editor, there might be a problem with the "spacing" of the keyboard grid generated in the subroutine. If this happens, you will notice that the right column or two might not "clear" when releasing the key. To remedy this, insert additional spaces as needed to allow the vertical bars "|" to align with the "+" signs in the row above. Your grid should look like the example code in the keypad pdf.
