This week, John brought in the 3d printed cup holder and metal fabricated drink dispenser actuator head for the air solenoid. It should work great, although it may need to be stabilized from spinning in place. It seemed that 25 lbs of force was proper for confident actuation. The 4.2A, 24V DC stepper motor was demonstrated offline, then connected to the PLC by the end of class and was used to drive the belt in one direction (proof we could get it to at least run) using a simple flashing timer logic PLC program. It was interesting to look up the internals of how a DC stepper motor actually works, with two sets of magnetic coils and variable voltage supplied to them to achieve the different grades of rotation.
