Week #7: (10/15) Power Tool Safety

Post by rjagodowski »

NOTE: Today, 10/15, is a Tuesday which follows a Monday schedule per the STCC Academic Calendar. Therefore our EET-104 Safety & Health in Industry class will meet today. Also note that the first Quiz Pack for the semester will be distributed today and is due on or before 4:00 P.M. on Monday, 10/21. Note that the quiz pack does NOT contain any questions about tool safety. These questions will be held until the second Quiz Pack.

HOMEWORK: You should read all of Chapter 4 and answer the Review Questions 1-21 on pages 78 & 79 and the NIMS questions 1-5 on page 79.

Back on Week #5 we discussed hand-tool safety. We'll revisit a few of the links presented back in Week #5. Today's lecture will focus on power tools safety which begins on page 73 in the text on section 4.11.

30 Tips for Hand and Power Tool Safety.

This video focuses on Circular Saw Safety (25:11) only. It's too long to view in class, but you are encouraged to watch it as it includes many scenarios specific to circuit saw use & safety.

Since corded power tools are commonly used in locations which might become wet or are wet, they should be used with a GFCI for shock protection. Cordless devices, typically operating at much lower voltages, don't require the GFCI protection.

The Electrical Engineering Technology Department recently purchased an assortment of Milwaukee cordless power tools in their M18 series. Over the next few days I will put links to the tools and their operating manuals. Between now and the end of the semester, we will have opportunities to handle and possibly use several of these power tools to perform some fundamental operations. The large size of the class will make this a bit challenging, but we'll work out a system.
