Week #8: (10/26) BoeBot Lab #3 (Table 3-1 Graph).

Post by rjagodowski »

You should continue working on your Boebot this week. You should complete Chapter 3 (including Table 3-1 and its graph) and begin working in Chapter 4. Remember to do the exercises at the end of each chapter.

Table 3-1 on page 97 of the text has you collect data points so that you can create a graph of the Rotational Velocity of the Servo Motors versus the Pulse Width of the servo control signal. The attached Excel file should facilitate your graphing. Download this file and open it in Excel (is on our computers in 20/M118). Complete the RPM values from the table you completed in your text and you should automatically see the data points appear on the graph as you complete the table. Remember that according to the text, clockwise (CW) is negative and counter-clockwise (CCW) is positive.

Create your graph using the Excel spreadsheet given above and post your data graph as a reply to this topic. A sample post and instructions will be given as a Reply below.

NOTE: If you don't have Excel on your home computer, it is part of the MIcroSoft Office suite of products, which is available in numerous packages, including a student version. It is a pay product. A "free" alternative is LibreOffice and is available for free download for Windows, Mac & Linux operating systems. It is probably about 99% compatible with MS Office, though there are occasion differences. Considering it's cost (free) it's a great competitor to the MS Office and fits nicely into limited budgets. The Word processor is called Writer and the Spreadsheet is called Calc.

The procedure to create an Excel graph and post it here in the Forums is shown below. Your graph should look a bit better as mine was made using guesstimated values.

PROCEDURE:

1.) If you download the "Table 3-1 in the BoeBot Text v15.1.xlsx" file from the main topic above, save it in a convenient location on your computer and then double click on it on the computers in lab, it should automatically open up the file in Excel. Otherwise, open Excel then navigate to File>Open and open the file.

2.) As shown in class, fill in the chart with your recorded data.

3.) The graph area has already been set up for you in the file. As you input your data points, you should see them appear on the graph. The axis' will be scaled automatically. You should now have a graph that looks similar to the one below. Use your cursor to select either the Table Values and continue through to step #7. Then return to this step and select the Graph and continue. This will give you two different pictures: one of Table 3-1 and one of the graph.

4.) From Excel, use the Copy function pull down tab to select "Copy as Picture". Select "As shown on Screen" and "Picture" as your two options.

5.) Open the MS Paint program. This program should be under "All Programs" > "Accessories" on the Windows Menu.

6.) Paste your Excel chart into a new Paint screen.

7.) In Paint, click on "Crop". Then click File > Save As > jpeg and select the location to save the file. You might have to use the "Select" and "Rectangular Selection" before the "Crop" is enabled. If this was your Table, go back to Step #3 and do the same thing to get a picture of the graph. Once you have both the Table & Graph picture files, proceed to Step #8.

8.) Create (or Edit) your post in this Topic and attach your picture. You can Preview your post before you Submit if you want to make sure it looks proper, or you can edit it after you post. You can select "Place inline" if you want the picture to be in a specific part of your post. To do so, put the cursor at the intended target area and the click on "Place Inline".

Ryan, your table and graph don't have the RPM values, they have the actual number of rotations counted in 6 seconds. These values need to be multiplied by 10 and then graphed. I can show you an easy way to do this in Excel in lab on Monday. RJ.
