Week #12: Pneumatic & Hydraulic Components & Cavitation

Post by rjagodowski »

This week we'll revisit a few of the links presented back in the recent weeks we might have skipped over due to time constraints.

Then we'll discuss hydraulic systems, pumps & valves and the topic of Cavitation in Hydraulic systems.

The Hydraulic System (has sound).

Hydraulic Pumps from wisc-online.com.

Hydraulic Directional Control Valves

Hydraulic System Pressure

Aeration vs. Cavitation in Hydraulic Systems from FluidPowerWorld.com .

Hydraulic Pump Cavitation - What is it & How can you prevent it.

Here's a video on Cavitation in Hydraulic Pumps from Koldwater Software (<5 min).

All About Hydraulic Cavitation (12 min)

We didn't view This Video in the Zoom Session for today, it's at a level a bit higher than we present. BUT...it does have some good effects. They are showing cavitation with water. BUT...if you start at about the 5:30 mark, they show the audible sound of the cavitation, but a bit later they show slow motion creation and implosion of cavitation bubbles, which is pretty neat. Continue watching to see the formation of the micro-jet which is the destructive pressure of the collapse. At 8:30 in the video they show actual pump impellers which have been exposed to cavitation, to show how the damage occurs.

This is a great video on Hydraulic Pump Life & Cavitation but is rather long(1hr 02min). A good watch when either stuck inside during a quarantine or for a cold winter night by the fire!
