Week #2: Protoboard Intro, 555 Timer & Oscope
This is the same lab experiment most of you will perform this week in EET-210. A copy of the handout distributed in lab/class is attached here: here.
Protoboard/Breadboard Introduction:
This week you will have an introduction to the protoboards/breadboards that we will be using throughout the semester. There are a couple of links posted for reading material here:
http://eecs.vanderbilt.edu/courses/ee213/Breadboard.htm
http://electronicsclub.info/breadboard.htm and
http://www.play-hookey.com/digital_expe ... ckets.html
There are also two YouTube videos. Watch BOTH YouTube Videos. (If you do not have speakers connected to your computer, please ask your instructor for speakers. It's probably best if you create small groups of students to watch the videos, or your instructor might wish to project these videos.)
Part 1 explains how connections and components are placed on the protoboard. Part 2 continues with circuit construction tips and guides you through the construction of a circuit using a 555 Timer IC (integrated circuit) that will flash an LED (light emitting diode).
Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiqNaSPTI7w
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq9XMNso ... re=related
Part 2 of the video takes you through a step-by-step assembly of this circuit. Even if you don't have speakers on your computer, you can visually see how each component and connection is made. You will need the following components:
COMPONENTS:
Protoboard (plastic black box with power, switches, etc.)
555 Time IC (8-pin dual in-line package (DIP))
Red LED
C1 10 uF Electrolytic Capacitor
R1 4.7 kilo-ohm resistor (yellow-violet-red-gold)
R2 10 kilo-ohm resistor (brown-black-orange-gold)
R3 1 kilo-ohm resistor (brown-black-red-gold)
Connection wire.
Construct the circuit and have your instructor verify it's operation.
Select one of the Agilent Oscilloscopes and see if you can get a measurement of the signals on pin 3 and pin 2 of the 555. (Pin 3 should be a pulse waveform and pin 2 should resemble a portion of an RC charge/discharge curve.)
The pdf of the users manual for the oscilloscope can be found here: https://cset.stcc.edu/phpBB3/viewtopic. ... 5567#p5567.
Put your name or initials as labels on the Ch1. or Ch2. axis'.
Use your USB thumb drive to save a copy of the screen. Ask your professor for the proper format to use to save the picture. Then post your picture in the form of a reply to this post.
Then disassemble your circuit and return all components to their proper location. Be sure to leave your work area NEATER than it was when you arrived.
When you have connected the circuit and the scope and it has been verified by your instructor, take a screenshot showing the output voltage of the 555 and charge/discharge voltage across the 10 uF capacitor. You should have your name or initials on the screen shot. The manual for the oscilloscope can be found Protoboard/Breadboard Introduction:
