Week #6: Complete Eaton Sensor Handouts.

Post by rjagodowski »

This week we will finish the discussion on the Eaton Sensors Handouts that we've been working on for the past few weeks.

We'll begin the lecture with a continuation of the 2, 3 & 4 wire sensor tutorials posted in Week #5.

Additonal information: Sinking & Sourcing Concepts from AutomationDirect.

You will be given a take-home assignment based upon these handouts which will be distributed on Tuesday, 3/3. If you are not in class on 3/3, please see your professor at your earliest convenience to get a copy of the assignment.

Our discussion of the enclosures for the switches & sensors brought up the safety concerns of dust present in the environment of an electrical spark. These links show some of the concerns.

Here's a video of a dust explosion demonstration from FM Global.

Here's the story and some pics of the Jahn Foundry dust explosion which happened here in Springfield in 1999.

Here's a pdf about dust explosions: Here are some documents from NewsonGale about explosion hazards of various materials. NewsonGale Case Studies of Static Ignition. While we were discussing ignition possibilities from switches, static electricity can also be the ignition source for many materials.
