Definitions
Operational technology (OT) monitors and manages industrial process assets, intelligent devices, and manufacturing/industrial equipment. These cyber-physical systems use sensors to measure physical values or actuators to convert software commands to mechanical systems. OT devices communicate with each other and information technology systems using computer software and network connections.
Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, transmit, and process data. This discipline began as “data processing” in the early days of computing. Modern IT should not be limited to this dated definition. It has been typically used in the context of business applications, but now extends to entertainment, gaming, video conferencing, secure communications, mobile infrastructure, and many new consumer & commercial technologies.
